Album Review: Scorpions - Love at First Sting

As a big fan of Rock and Metal music, I have many albums in my collection from artists in such genres, although until recently I haven't heard Love at First Sting by German Hard Rock/Heavy Metal band Scorpions even though I had it in my collection since my friend gave it to me.

The album ranked really high, reaching number 6 on the Billboard 200 and German Albums Chart, going to it's highest at Number 4 on the French Albums Charts and its lowest position being number 48 on the New Zealand Charts. It was certified 3xPlatinum in 1995 selling over 3,000,000 copies in America and 2xPlatinum in 1988 in Canada.

Despite its success, most of you would probably only know the album for one song and one song only, the second track on the album, "Rock You Like a Hurricane".

The song is insanely memorable with its guitar work and chorus, which is fun to sing along to and makes it a hard rock anthem and concert staple. The song is everywhere, in TV, Movies, Games and Commercials and is commonly played at sport shows becoming somewhat of an unofficial anthem, and for good reason, the song is just awesome. The song was also one of the big breaks that put the band in the mainstream spotlight ranking at Number 25 on the Billboard Hot 100 and Number 5 on the Mainstream Rock Tracks, although it only reached number 78 on the UK Singles Chart.

My second favourite song off the album is "As Soon as the Good Times Roll" as it starts off with a promising guitar riff and strong baseline. Even if the vocals at the beginning are rather whispery, the middle when it picks up is just incredible, although it was unfortunately not released as an official single.

In between these songs are a few hit or miss songs such as "I'm Leaving You" which sounds like a song The Misfits from Jem and the Holograms would sing, and "The Same Thrill" which kind of blends in with the rest of the album. However, he album does pick up at the eighth track "Crossfire" which has lyrics that sound very anti-drafting and anti-war, which does make sense with the very millitary-esqu drumming.

The album ends with the track "Still Loving You" which is a much softer song compared to the rest of the album. It is not a bad way for the album to end especially considering the title of the album, but I don't really think it is one of the stronger songs on the album, but apparently I may stand alone on that one since the song reached Number 3 on both the French and Swiss Singles Charts and Number 64 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Overall, I can't really say that there is no reason people have chosen "Rock You Like a Hurricane" over anything else off the album, but the rest of the album is not worth passing up, especially for any Rock or Metal fan. I talked about what I consider the highlights of the album enough, and even the low points are not bad songs, just songs that don't really offer a whole lot compared to the rest of the album.

The album has earned a full 8/10 for the musical work and for the highlights of the album being very good.
