Album Review: P.O.D. - Satellite

Another one of those albums I never really listened to, even though I do own it. P.O.D. is a Christian rap metal band, yes that is a thing. No, I'm not going to say that it sucks because it is Christian, that would be stupid, but the album is not anything worth celebrating either.

Satellite was released on... September 11th 2001? Okay moving on, this was the fourth studio album by the band and peaked at number 4 on the New Zealand Albums Chart, number 16 on the UK Albums Chart and Number 6 on the Billboard 200. It reached the highest on the Top Christian Albums, and reached its lowest on the French Albums Chart only reaching number 50. It went 3xPlatinum in the U.S. and only Platinum in Australia and Canada.

The album does start off promising with "Set it Off" kicking off with a short bit of drumming and instrumentals, the second track is also not bad with a decent chorus. It's the third track, "Boom", that things start to fall, sounding a bit generic and more like Limp Bizkit instead of Linkin Park or Korn.

The only track I actually kind of liked on the album was the fourth track "Youth of the Nation" which starts off slowly and has some good lyrics. Although this was the point where the rapping started to sound very similar to me. The titular track "Satellite" Sounds very much like generic Alternative Metal and makes me wish I was listening to System of a Down instead. and the track "Ridiculous" has a more reggae sound to it than previous tracks, but is also nothing worth talking very much about.

The album also tries to have two instrumentals. I like instrumental tracks or songs that have very long solos, they really show off the skills of the rest of the band, but the two on this album are way to short and didn't build on themselves. "Anything Right" was another song I didn't dislike as it had some interesting verses with slow instrumentals and strings, although what keeps it from being an Album Highlight is the chorus which sounds like the rest of the album.

The album ends with "Portrait", and it is also pretty bad, and that is disappointing because the opening and chorus are not bad, but the rest of the song is just a mess of screaming vocals and generic instruments.

Overall, I say skip this album, if you want to have a good Christian metal band I'd say keep searching. The album meshes with itself, has very few highlights, if any at all and is only good for background noise in my opinion.

I give it a 3/10 as it is simply just generic and forgettable.
